Medical education and training in Odisha has been strengthened with posting of new Assistant Professors (specialists and super-specialists).

The number of government-run medical colleges and hospitals in Odisha has increased from 12 to 14 in the last one year, the health and family welfare department officials said on Thursday.

Two new medical colleges-Government Medical College and Hospital, Phulbani in the district of Kandhamal, and Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College & Hospital, Talcher in the district of Angul have become functional in the current year.

With this the total number of Government Medical Colleges in Odisha has increased from 12 to 14, added the officials.

In 2024, the Maharaja Jajati Keshari Medical College and hospital Jajpur, was made operational.

Besides, two Post Graduate Institutes functioning in the State have also been strengthened with new appointments.

In the meantime, the State Government has appointed 91 Assistant Professors in 23 broad speciality disciplines and 7 Assistant Professors in 6 super-specialist disciplines at different Medical Colleges of the State.

New appointments include 5 specialists and 4 super specialists at Sriram Chandra Bhanj Medical College and Hospital Cuttack, 19 specialists and 3 super-specialists at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, 6 specialists at PRM Medical College and Hospital, Baripada, one specialist at SLN Medical College and Hospital Koraput, 6 specialists in FM Medical college and hospital Balasore, one specialist at BB Medical College and Hospital in Balangir, 2 specialists at SJ Medical College and Hospital in Puri, 6 specialists at Government Medical College and Hospital in Sundargarh, 5 specialists at DD Medical College and Hospital in Keonjhar, 7 specialists at SRM Medical College and Hospital in Bhawanipatna, 2 specialists at MJK Medical College and Hospital in Jajpur, 8 specialists at PMP Medical College and Hospital in Talcher, 5 specialists at Government Medical College and Hospital in Phulbani, and 8 specialists at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Capital Hospital Bhubaneswar.

Besides, 38 posts of Professor and 27 posts of Associate Professor have also been filled up in medical colleges of the State through departmental promotion.

Apart from this, medical education and clinical services at Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC), Cuttack has been improved with posting of new 10 super specialist Assistant Professors in the departments of Surgical Oncology, Gynaecological Oncology, Head & Neck Surgery, Medical Oncology and Uro-Oncology.

Besides, one post of Professor and 2 posts of Associate Professors in the Institute have also been filled up through departmental promotion.

Steps are being taken for appointment of more specialists and super specialists in the Government Medical College and Hospitals of the State. Batch-wise passing out of the medicos from these campuses will cater to the rising need of doctors and specialists for ensuring quality universal health care in the State.
